Set in the 1980s and based on “disturbingly true events,” the Hulu limited series “Candy” stars Jessica Biel as the titular Texas housewife and mother whose affair leads to fatal results. The series premieres Monday May 9, kicking off a five-night event leading up to the finale May 13. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Nigerian-American filmmaker Julius Onah, best known his work on the sci-fi sequel “The Cloverfield Paradox” and the Sundance drama “Luce” is directing “Captain America 4.” The currently-untitled sequel is being written by “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” creator Malcolm Spellman and one of the show’s staff writers, Dalan Musson. After years of working on short films, Onah made his feature directorial debut on the 2015 crime thriller “The Girl Is in Trouble....

But, in a twist on the male-driven original, this sequel will be told from the female perspective. “‘Chronicle’ was literally the best return on investment, any of my movies ever made. ‘Chronicle’ we did for $12 million, and it grossed $126.64 million worldwide,” said John Davis, who also serves as a producer on the recent Disney film “Jungle Cruise.” “Then it had a huge afterlife in syndication. Set in the 1970s, “Dark Winds” centers on two detectives, Leephorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Chee (Kiowa Gordon), who are tasked with finding a murderer behind multiple homicides. Yet nothing is as it seems as the case takes a turn towards the spiritual. Creator Graham Roland adapted the six-episode limited series based on the detective novels by Tony Hillerman. Star McClarnon is also executive producing, along with George R. R. Martin and Robert Redford....

The eight-part season will center on the life of musician and civil rights leader Aretha Franklin, also known as the Queen of Soul. “Genius: Aretha” will premiere March 21 on National Geographic, and two new episodes will air on the following three days. All episodes will be available for streaming on Hulu the day after their Nat Geo debuts. Per National Geographic, Season 3 of “Genius” will explore Aretha Franklin’s musical genius and incomparable career, as well as the immeasurable impact and lasting influence she has had on music and culture around the world....

Overall, the weekend’s top 10 grossed around $24 million, with all films seeing about $26 million. That’s about 45 percent less than last weekend’s holiday total, but still second best for the year so far. It would have been nice to have another big, new title to build on last weekend’s success, but for now struggling theaters have holdovers. What started in 1975 with the disappearance of 20 people from a small town in Oregon, ended in 1997 with the largest suicide on U.S. soil and changed the face of modern New Age religion forever. “Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults” uses never-before-seen footage and first-person accounts to explore the infamous UFO cult that shocked the nation with their out-of-this-world beliefs....

The Jon M. Chu-directed musical, based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway production, is set apart from most films released anymore in several important ways. The preopening predictions of its gross — inexact these days, since they mostly poll the more limited audience that already has returned to theaters — suggest under $15 million. That would be under several recent debuts, but as always, the initial number might not tell the full story....

Nah. Yesterday came word that “Killers of the Flower Moon” definitely won’t be released until 2023. Since distributors Apple and Paramount never gave the film a date, you can’t say that it was pushed — especially since Scorsese is renowned for his exacting editing processes. Cannes 2023 now looks like a logical goal — that would make for a hell of an opening night — but Apple declined comment on its plans for the film....

Ethical non-monogamy doesn’t make for great dramatic conflict. Maybe that’s why alternative relationship structures such as polyamory are so rarely depicted onscreen. Where would we be if scripts couldn’t rely on torrid affairs or public marriage proposals for quotable monologues and heated arguments? If anything goes, what would people fight about? Turns out, quite a lot. But it’s not guaranteed to be any more compelling than the status quo. Though it boasts a picturesque setting and elegant shooting style, “Ma Belle, My Beauty” flounders under the weight of romantic drama cliches, even as it valiantly seeks to upend others....
