Only two weeks after Marvel and Disney got summer off to a strong start with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” attendance has returned to its anemic state. This weekend will amass around $74 million for yet another sub-$100 million total — virtually unprecedented for May. That’s half of the same weekend in 2019, reducing our ongoing four-week comparison to 58 percent for the same 2019 period. That’s close to the all-time low for this year....

“Eternals” is an ensemble-driven comic book movie starring the likes of Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, and Kit Harington. The story takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” and centers on an alien race living on Earth for over 7,000 years who team up to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants. While many cinephiles have wondered how Zhao will approach a big-budget blockbuster, the filmmaker stressed last year she did not approach “Eternals” any differently than “The Rider” or “Nomadland....

As for the cast, HBO confirms the following are locked in as series regulars for the new season: Emmy-winner Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Eric Dane, Angus Cloud, Jacob Elordi, Algee Smith, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira, Maude Apatow, Javon Walton, Dominic Fike, Storm Reid and Austin Abrams. The road to “Euphoria” Season 2 has been a long time coming. The new episodes were originally set to begin filming in March 2020, but the pandemic forced the season to go on an indefinite hiatus....

In 2014, I published a book called “Sitcom” that served as a history of the American situation comedy, covering the gamut from “I Love Lucy” to the present day. For that work, I wrote a chapter on “Friends,” rewatching the entirety of the series and appreciating its warmth and its acidic vigor. I felt like I’d said my piece. Then I came across this story in the New York Times about high-school kids watching “Friends” on Netflix and shipping Ross and Rachel, as if this were a hot new series and not a two-decade-old show....

Sam is a contract killer, she’s very good at her job, and she loves nothing more than a giant, slurpy glass of ice cream and milk after a job well done....

Pulling liberally from other rom-com gems like “Notting Hill” and “Maid in Manhattan,” “Marry Me” is rife with the kind of tropes audiences expect (and desire!) from the genre. We’ve got mismatched lovers, a big crazy scheme that brings them together, a little bit of subterfuge, cute kiddos, and a potentially devious ex. A generous dollop of montages help it go down easy, and there’s song and dance to boot....

The film is the directorial debut of David Gutnik, who is also the editor of several acclaimed features, including Christina Choe’s 2018 Sundance award-winning drama “Nancy.” Gutnik wrote the film alongside two of his stars, Jade Eshete (“Billions” and “High Maintenance”) and Assol Abdullina (in one of her first film roles), and the film also features leading roles from indie darlings Kate Lyn Sheil and Lindsay Burdge. The film was produced by Liz Cardenas and Emily McEvoy....

In some respects, “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” — Ana Lily Amirpour’s latest feature, premiering at this year’s Venice Film Festival — could be called a return to form, or at least a return to the tropes and visual tendencies the Iranian-American director showed in her promising 2014 debut, “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.” After Amirpour’s disastrous collaboration with Netflix in “The Bad Batch,” “Mona Lisa” feels like a movie that is of a kind with her initial preoccupations....

“Mortal Kombat” marks the third live-action film adaptation of the classic fighting video game franchise, which debuted in 1992 and has received over a dozen sequels. Wan, who directed hit films such as “Aquaman,” “Furious 7,” “The Conjuring,” and 2004’s “Saw, produced the film alongside Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, and Simon McQuoid, who also served as director. The Warner Bros. synopsis for the film reads: In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage — or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down....

“There are three things that affected me growing up: Ray Harryhausen movies, Disneyland — particularly the Haunted Mansion, the Tiki Room, and Pirates of the Caribbean — and obviously the Muppets,” Thatcher, who’s worked with the Muppets for 35 years, told IndieWire. Unofficially, you could also include Halloween. Thatcher said he remembers being a small child humming the Haunted Mansion score as soon as the leaves started changing. “The Muppets have done, like, nine Christmas specials — this is the first [for] Halloween....
